Mission

Mission

At First Presbyterian Church, we strive to show the world that love is a verb. We love because God first loved us in Christ, and we strive to embody God's love in all we say and do, reaching beyond the boundaries of race, economics, and culture. Mission is a word that literally means "sent out," and as Presbyterians we believe worship and Christian Education opportunities prepare us to be sent out into all the places God calls us to serve in Christ's name. We strive to be selfless in our service to God and neighbor, embodying our prayers as servants of Jesus Christ, who gave of himself, expecting nothing in return.

We listen intently for God's call and confront our future with hope and confidence in God's purposes. From building houses for Habitat for Humanity to collecting food for United Ministries, from going on mission trips to places such as West Virginia, Edisto, North Carolina, Alaska, and Russia to visiting the elderly at the Presbyterian Home, from ministering to the children at Thornwell Home to reaching out to Presbyterian College students with the love of Christ, we give thanks for a multitude of ways to serve God.

Our Community Outreach Committee and Global Missions Committee have many exciting ways for you to get involved. By serving God through mission, we pattern our very lives after Jesus Christ, and we do our part at helping make First Presbyterian the kind of church God dreams of. The body of Christ is incomplete with you.

Stephen Ministry

First Presbyterian Church - Clinton has been a Stephen Ministry Congregation since June, 2015. Our Stephen Ministry and its associated ministries, as "Journeying through Grief" and our Card Ministry with some visitations, is a subcommittee of the Congregational Care Committee.

Stephen Ministry is a one-on-one lay care ministry where congregations train and commission lay caregivers, known as Stephen Ministers or Care Givers, to provide confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting. Some examples of care provided are loss of a loved one, loss of a job, moving to a new home, divorce, hospitalization, diagnosis of a terminal illness, or spiritual crisis. Care Receivers can be referred by the minister, church staff, church members, or the individual with needs.

Potential Care Receivers are interviewed by the Stephen Leaders. Some individuals may be referred to other medical or community services for more appropriate care.

Stephen Ministers receive at least 50 hours of training by Stephen Leaders to care for individuals, known as Care Receivers. They agree to serve for a minimum of 2 years and attend Continuing Education sessions led by Stephen Leaders and other church and community agency leaders. Stephen Ministers with Care Receivers also participate in Supervision with Stephen Leaders and fellow Stephen Ministers to provide support for the Care Giver-Care Receiver relationship.

Stephen Ministers meet with their Care Receivers on a regular basis for about an hour in a convenient and strictly confidential manner. These meetings are usually conducted in person, but sometimes circumstances require phone sessions or other forms of communication.

Stephen Ministry (cont'd.)

Stephen Leaders are trained by Stephen Ministry professional staff in small groups via Zoom once a week for several months. The schedule is accommodating for employed and retired individuals. Stephen Leaders plan Continuing Education studies, teach new Stephen Ministers, match Stephen Ministers with Care Receivers, and supervise Care Giver-Care Receiver relationships.

Journeying through Grief ministry provides four short books to grieving people at four crucial times: about 3 weeks after the passing of a loved one, 3 months later, 6 months later, and finally about a month before the anniversary. The accompanying letters and booklets are prepared by the Stephen Ministry Leaders and personally delivered or mailed to the recipients.

Our Card Ministry evolved from sending Valentine cards to church members and residents at the Presbyterian Community-Clinton to sending greeting cards to members who have been hospitalized, experiencing surgery or long-term illness, homebound, living in alternative arrangements, or living out-of-town. Stephen Ministers and other church members have assisted in writing personal messages on the cards, addressing envelopes, and mailing or personally delivering and briefly visiting the recipients.
